Airlines are continuing to update their cancellation policies to reflect travel restrictions put in place due to COVID-19. While the policies vary by airline, most airlines are working to create more flexibility to better accommodate travelers.
Some of the policy updates from major airlines include:
- waiving change fees,
- extended expiration dates for Unused E-Tickets,
- allowing Basic Economy fares to be cancelled and rebooked, etc.
- allowing non-refundable tickets to be cancelled and rebooked
As these policies have been changing frequently, it’s best to visit the airlines’ websites directly.

What is an Unused E-Ticket or Ticket on File?
A Ticket on File is the unused portion of a non-refundable ticket where the customer was unable to make the trip. The value left on the ticket is available for use on future travel.
A Ticket on File is also considered an Unused E-Ticket.
For example, if a traveler named Eleanor Shelstrop purchased a non-refundable ticket to fly from Atlanta to Washington, DC and she cancelled the trip, she would have a Ticket on File for the amount of her ticket but would, in most situations, have to pay a change fee in order to use it.
What is a change fee?
Change fees are subject to the airline but are typically applied when a change is made to an existing ticket.
In addition to the fee, airlines charge the customer the difference in fare between the original ticket purchased and the new ticket.
We do pass along the airline’s fees to travelers, but Upside does not charge additional change fees.
